Ashes of Creation Wiki is currently testing a custom language translation extension that provides a template based approach to translation. We believe this is a balanced compromise between the overhead of manual translation and the complexity of automated translation systems. We are in early testing and development and hope you can provide feedback on your experiences in the discussion page.

Translating at the template level

Ashes of Creation Wiki uses templates to house small blocks of information, as illustrated above. These templates are then assembled in the content pages to form articles. This template-oriented structure provides an ideal framework for adding in translation. Currently all articles and templates are in English, as this is the base language of this wiki.

Adding language variations of each template is straightforward. Simply append a language code to the end of the article then add in the translation to the new template. For example:

1. {{Fréttinga services}} is the original English language template.
2. {{Fréttinga services/de}} is its German language translation.

How the extension works

The extension automatically identifies the user's language from their preferences page.

• The extension automatically chooses the correct language templates to include into a page!
• Editors should not embed language codes into articles themselves.

If a template does not exist for a user's language, the extension will search for a closely matching language or if that cannot be found, will fall back to English.

Translation of parent articles.

Translation of parent articles are currently not handled by the extension.

Changes to the base template do not currently flag the language variants as requiring updates.

<nowiki><language/> tag to display available languages in an article.

The language tag is not implemented in this extension. This will likely be implemented via a magic word rather than a tag.
